Super-stylish bike share program coming to New York City

Bowery Lane Bicycles is providing the models for the NY Fashion Week scheme

A leading bike company in New York has teamed up with some of the world's top designers to offer a bike share program with a difference this September.

Conceived by non-profit organization The Fashion Center as part of New York Fashion Week (September 8-15), the Tour De Fashion will put 30 handmade, colorfully decorated Bowery Lane Bicycles on the streets of the Big Apple to ensure fitness-loving fashionistas can hop between shows.

But these are no ordinary paint jobs -- the project has enlisted 30 New York designers to style the bikes, including Diane von Furstenberg, Betsey Johnson, Isaac Mizrahi, Nicole Miller, Patricia Underwood, Elie Tahari, Nanette Lepore, Rebecca Minkoff, Carlos Falchi, Doo.Ri Chung, Rebecca Taylor and Prabal Gurung.

According to The Garment Girls, a blog written by three interns working for the Fashion Center, the bikes have been delivered to their designers and are currently being customized, in time for the opening of New York Fashion Week, by mid-September.

They will come with a map of quick and safe bike routes and will be free to rent from a staffed docking station on the Broadway plazas, although users will need to leave a security deposit.

After New York Fashion Week ends, the bikes are set to be auctioned off, with proceeds going towards the Council of Fashion Designers of America Incubator program.
