New Survey Reveals the Most Common Sex Injuries

Like Santa Claus and the Loch Ness Monster, sex injuries can often feel more like urban myths than everyday realities but a new survey reveals that almost one-fifth of all sexually active adults have been hurt while getting it on. The survey was conducted by EuroClinix, a health company, and asked 2,000 British adults about a variety of details about their sexual history, included body confidence, the number of sexual partners they’ve had, and whether or not they have been injured in bed.

According to the results of the survey, 15 percent of participants admitted to experiencing a sex injury, a number which rose to 22 percent for participants between the ages of 18 and 24 years old. Women were victims of the most common injury, as vaginal tears landed at the top of the list, followed by carpet burn and fractured penises.

Fortunately, most of these injuries can be treated at home or will heal on their own over time (except for a broken penis, which should involve an immediate trip to the doctor, as it could result in a rupture). But even when an injury warrants medical attention, it is highly unlikely that people will seek out the care they should. According to the survey, only two percent of the 2,000 adults surveyed said they had sought out medical advice after experiencing a sex injury, with 15 percent saying they had been injured but did not seek medical treatment.

The survey did not just cover sex injuries, it also asked participants about the number of sexual partners they had and the results revealed that over 40 percent of those surveyed had less than four sexual partners, with 64 percent of participants having less than 10 partners. The survey also revealed that the majority of both men and women struggled with body confidence during sex, with only 18 percent of men and nine percent of women saying they always felt body confidence during sex.
