The United Arab Emirates confirmed that it signed agreements with the United States on former President Donald Trump's last full day in office to purchase up to 50 F-35 jets, 18 armed drones and other defense equipment in a deal worth $23 billion. The UAE embassy in Washington said in a statement on its website that the letters of agreement had been finalised on Tuesday confirming terms of purchase, including costs, technical specifications and anticipated delivery schedules. The deal, however, could now be reviewed as the new Biden administration has said it will re-examine the agreements for the sale, which the Trump administration had said supported U.S. foreign policy and national security objectives by allowing the UAE to deter Iranian "threats".
The new COVID-19 variant identified in South Africa can evade the antibodies that attack it in treatments using blood plasma from previously recovered patients, and may reduce the efficacy of the current line of vaccines, scientists said on Wednesday. Researchers are racing to establish whether the vaccines currently being rolled out across the globe are effective against the so-called 501Y.V2 variant, identified by South African genomics experts late last year in Nelson Mandela Bay. "This lineage exhibits complete escape from three classes of therapeutically relevant monoclonal antibodies," the team of scientists from three South African universities working with the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) wrote in a paper in bioRxiv, a website that publishes scientific research prior to its being peer-reviewed and submitted to journals.

A woman was caught on a security camera lying down and posing for photographs on a railway track in Sussex, England, video released by Network Rail shows. This clip, taken from CCTV footage at Tidemills level crossing, shows a woman walking onto the train tracks before lying on her back while another woman takes photos.Network Rail said they were concerned about a rash of risky behavior at the crossing recently. The railway said this was the 17th incident at the crossing in the last nine months, with 15 recorded near-misses, compared to four incidents in the whole of 2019.British Transport Police Inspector Jonathan Pine said the two women were oblivious to the dangers of level crossings.“This is unthinkably stupid behavior … Trains pass through this line at speeds of up to 70 mph, so they could quite easily have been moments away from a catastrophic incident. We’ve seen first-hand the consequences of this sort of recklessness and no photo opportunity is worth risking your life for,” Pine said.Other concerning events recorded at Tidemills include level crossing users filming the emergency stop of an oncoming train, bicyclists narrowly missing a train, a funeral procession using the crossing, and “large groups of pedestrians” having close calls while trying to beat approaching trains, the railway said. Google X’s bet was to use balloons to reach a larger percentage of unconnected people, mostly in the rural areas. The technology worked by floating internet-connected balloons into the stratosphere and serving as an option for local telecoms companies to reach more customers with internet access rather than have to spend the hundreds of million dollars required to build out a physical internet backbone to reach a relatively small number of people in each remote area.
