Tacurong Implements Anti-Smoking Law

TACURONG CITY (PIA) - The Anti-Smoking Ordinance of this city will be fully implemented effective January, 2013, local officials said.

However, City Councilor Psyche Sucaldito said the ordinance will already take effect in the city government buildings and areas starting December 10, 2012.

"We are setting the standard so we need to start earlier than the rest of the city," said Sucaldito, author of the ordinance.

"We should be good examples," he pointed out.

To jumpstart the ordinance's implementation, an orientation among city anti-smoking enforcers was conducted last November 26.

According to Sucaldito, salient points of the ordinance were discussed during the activity, which was participated in by at least 33 representatives from the Task Force Talakudong, Department of Education (DepEd), Philippine National Police (PNP), civilian volunteer officers, barangay (village) councils, and traffic enforcers, among others.

Enforcement procedures were also deliberated.

Under the ordinance, business establishments are directed to designate smoking areas, and sari-sari stores must be prohibited from selling cigarettes to minors.

Regulation of smoking among adults was also discussed. Smoking is prohibited among minors.
