The local government of Tagaytay City has implemented a mandatory evacuation in eight barangays that might be hit by the base surge or volcanic tsunami in case a major explosion takes place at the Taal Volcano.
Authorities said not all barangays in the city that are under the 14-kilometer danger zone will be hit by the base surge or tsunami as some are situated in the elevated portion of Tagaytay.
According to Tagaytay City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office chief Jose Clyde Yayong, there is no need to force residents to evacuate even though they are within the danger zone.
“Ito po kasing sa mga ibabang ito dito lang po yung may residential areas and ang elevation nito is nasa 300 meters. Nag enforce kami dito ng forced evacuation sa dalawang barangay while the rest is voluntary evacuation,” Yayong said.
The eight barangays under mandatory evacuation are:
- Brgy. Sambong
- Brgy. Bagong Tubig
- Brgy. Kaybagal South
- Brgy. Maharlika West
- Brgy. Maharlika East
- Brgy. Crossing East
- Brgy. San Jose
- Brgy. Tolentino East
Meanwhile, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has clarified its earlier recommendation for all business establishments under the 14-kilometer danger zone to remain close.
The department said that even with the recommendation, they will leave it to the local government to decide on the matter.
“As we have stated it was already clarified by Secretary Año himself na pinasasalamatan po namin ni City Mayor na they will leave it to the local government unit kung ipasara o bukas yung mga business establishment,” Yayong said.
The local government data shows around 122 business establishments in the city have resumed operation since Tuesday, Jan. 21. — (from the report of Correspondent Benedict Samson) /mbmf
