Tanod killed trying to protect sons

A BARANGAY tanod died after he was stabbed trying to break up a fight between his two sons and their friends in Purok 1, Sitio Ardonex, Barangay Tagjaguimit, City of Naga in southern Cebu in the early hours of Sunday, Oct. 30, 2022.

The victim, who was identified as 57-year-old Danilo Alerta, was declared dead on arrival at the hospital.

The suspects, two 17-year-olds, were arrested around 8 a.m. that same day.

SSgt. Jake Catane, investigator of the City of Naga Police Station, said Danilo’s son Dennis, 22, and the latter’s younger brother who is a minor had gone to a dance in a neighboring barangay with their friends.

Catane said the younger brother had an altercation with a member of their group and ended up getting punched. The matter, though, was resolved.

However, on their way home, Dennis again confronted the person who punched his brother and a rumble ensued.

Catane said Danilo arrived at the scene and saw his two sons in the middle of the fray.

He immediately placed himself between them and their opponents, but their opponents attacked him.

“Danilo suddenly slumped. They thought he had a heart attack. He was rushed to the hospital but he died along the way. When his body was later examined, a small stab wound was found in his chest,” Catane said in Cebuano.

The police officer said no one noticed that Danilo had been wounded because he was not bleeding and it was dark.

When police went to the scene of the fight, they found a gaff or a razor-sharp steel blade used for cockfighting.

Catane said they gathered everyone involved in the morning for questioning.

One of the 17-year-olds admitted that he stabbed Danilo with the gaff and he had a cut in the hand to show for it. The other said he punched the victim.

Catane said the two suspects, who are the Alerta’s neighbors, are expected to issue an extrajudicial confession.

He said Dennis has been detained and will be charged with alarm and scandal for harassment and for firing his gun. (GPL / PJB)
