FORMER world champion Marlon Tapales made quick work of Mexican journeyman Jose Estrella after knocking him out in two rounds last Sunday, May 15 (PH time), at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.

The 30-year-old Tapales unleashed a vicious body shot that dropped Estrella to the canvas. Estrella tried to stand up but was counted out by referee Ray Corona at the 1:39 mark of the second round.

Tapales won his third straight fight and improved to 36-3 with 19 knockouts.

The 32-year-old Estrella got knocked for the ninth time in his career and dropped to 23-19-1 with 16 knockouts.

Tapales is the No. 1 ranked super bantamweight by the International Boxing Federation (IBF). He’s waiting to challenge the winner of the world championship fight between IBF and World Boxing Association (WBA) super bantamweight king Murodjon Akhmadaliev and Ronny Rios set on June 25 at the Tech Port Arena in San Antonio, Texas.

Tapales is also ranked No. 9 by the World Boxing Organization.

Tapales is the former WBO bantamweight champion. He won the belt with an 11th round knockout of Panya Uthok in Thailand in 2016.
