THE return of former world champion Marlon Tapales will be fought in closed doors inside the Sanman Gym because of strict health protocols due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Boxing fans, however, get to witness the Sanman Promotions-promoted show dubbed as “The Restart” live on Sanman Promotions’ official Facebook page on Nov. 21, 2020 in General Santos City.
“We are happy to be back on air to give you non-stop Pinoy boxing action. Sanman has made a name by pitting out the bravest Filipino warriors against each other and against foreign opponents. We always guarantee a night of knockouts. Please watch us live,” said Sanman Promotions CEO JC Manangquil.
Tapales, the former World Boxing Organization (WBO) bantamweight champion, faces experienced Eden Sonsona in a 10-round 132-pound catchweight.
The 28-year-old Tapales has been on a hiatus for close to a year since losing an 11th-round stoppage in an interim International Boxing Federation super bantamweight title against Ryosuke Iwasa on Dec. 7, 2019 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, USA.
From a once promising prospect, the 31-year-old Sonsona is now a veteran gatekeeper. He dropped his last five contests, with his latest defeat, a fourth-round stoppage against Adones Aguelo on Oct. 16, 2019 in Calbayog City.
Tapales is 33-3 with 16 knockouts, while Sonsona is 36-11-2 with 13 knockouts.
In the undercard, two-time world title challenger Aston Palicte (26-4-1, 22 KOs) faces off with Reymark Taday (10-12-1, 5 KOs), undefeated Dave Apolinario (13-0, 8 KOs) slugs it out with Bonjun Loperez (12-13-1, 6 KOs), unbeaten Michael Casama (5-0, 5 KOs) trades leathers with Virgil Degoma and Joey Canoy (15-4-1, 8 KOs) takes on Jovab Lucas (4-2-2, 2 KOs).
