FORMER World Boxing Organization (WBO) bantamweight king Marlon Tapales will be back in action this month after a long hiatus.
The 28-year-old Tapales faced off with grizzled veteran Eden Sonsona in the main event of a closed-doors Sanman Promotions boxing show on Nov. 21, 2020 at the Sanman Boxing
Gym in General Santos City.
“Eden is good. I can’t take any chances because I have not fought for a long time,” Tapales told SunStar Cebu.
Tapales has not seen action for close to a year. He last fought on Dec. 7, 2020, wherein he lost via an 11th round technical knockout in the hands of Ryosuke Iwasa in their interim International Boxing Federation (IBF) super bantamweight contest at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, USA.
Before that loss, he won 12 straight fights that include wins over Shohei Omori and former world champion Pungluang Sor Singyu.
The 31-year-old Sonsona, on the other hand, was once a promising prospect, which was being groomed to become a world title challenger. He’s now relegated as a gatekeeper to test young prospects if they are ready for the next level.
Sonsona has dropped his last five fights and has not fought for over a year. He suffered a fourth round stoppage against Cebu-based Adones Aguelo last Oct. 16, 2019 in Calbayog City. / EKA
