FORMER world champion Marlon Tapales will now be seeing action in the undercard of the all-Filipino World Boxing Council (WBC) bantamweight title fight between Nonito Donaire Jr. and unbeaten Reymart Gaballo on Dec. 11, 2021 at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.

Tapales takes on Japanese Hiroaki Teshigawara in an International Boxing Federation (IBF) super bantamweight title eliminator.

“We continued with our training. It was moved, but it’s just a few weeks,” Tapales said.

He told SunStar Cebu that they didn’t make any adjustments in their training camp.

Tapales and Teshigawara were supposed to fight on Nov. 27, 2021 in Brooklyn but that fight was pushed back a few weeks and at a different location.

The 29-year-old Tapales is raring to go and ecstatic to fight once again in boxing’s top level.

“I’m doing good right now. I’m 100 percent ready for the fight. I’m very excited for this fight,” he said.

Tapales last fought in the US in 2019. He challenged then IBF super bantamweight titleholder Ryosuke Iwasa in Brooklyn. The fight was close, but he was stopped by Iwasa in the 11th round.

After his loss to Iwasa, Tapales bounced back with a second round stoppage against once-promising Eden Sonsona on Nov. 21, 2020 in General Santos City. Since then, he has been training in the US in preparation for a big fight like this world title eliminator.

Tapales is training at Freddie Roach’s Wild Card Gym in Hollywood along with the likes of Filipino warriors Jade Bornea and Mark Magsayo.

“I have sparred with a lot of fighters. I don’t really remember their names because I have lots of different sparring partners. Now, I’m only sparring with Jade (Bornea) because the fight is already close and I only need to maintain my conditioning,” said Tapales.

Tapales is 34-3 with 17 knockouts, while Teshigawara is 22-2-2 with 15 knockouts.

Teshigawara is rated third, while Tapales is ranked fourth in the IBF super bantamweight division.

The winner of the eliminator will earn a world title shot against current IBF super bantamweight king Murodjon Akhmadaliev.
