DEFENDING champion Cebu Country Club (CCC) will be playing without its mainstay shotmaker Marko Sarmiento in the 73rd men’s Philippine Airlines (PAL) Interclub on March 4 to 7, 2020 in Bacolod City.
The Cebu-based club historically won the overall championship last year, ending the four-year reign of the Manila Southwoods, in Cebu.
It was a stunning win as CCC played in the Founders Class. It was only the second time that a team from a lower division went on to win the overall crown. The other team to do that was the 1988 Aguinaldo, which was made up of future international luminaries like Ramon Brobio and swing coach Bong Lopez.
As CCC tries to make it two in a row, the players have to do it without last year’s team captain Sarmiento. PAL veteran Bayani Garcia, who has a share of heroic games for CCC, will take over the team captain duties in Bacolod City.
“I have some important matters to attend so I haven’t been able to prepare,” said Sarmiento, who played in 19 editions of the PAL Interclub in the past 20 years.
According to Sarmiento, CCC is still having qualifying tournaments. The final list will be determined only on Feb. 15. (RSC)
