World chess champion Magnus Carlsen has finally beaten Wesley So in an online rapid chess final.
The Norwegian beat the Filipino-American in Armageddon to win the FTX Crypto Cup event of the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour.
Carlsen's victory in a major leg of tour gave him direct qualification to the final over-the-board event in September.
Carlsen took home the $60,000 top prize of the sixth event of the online $1.5 million tournament. He also won around $22,000 in Bitcoin.
This is the third time Carlsen and So faced each other in the finals of rapid chess tour.
So won the Opera Euro Rapid in February and the Skilling Open in November both at the expense of Carlsen.
Carlsen and So traded wins in the blitz tie breaks to usher the decisive Armageddon after the first and second matches ended level.
So demolished Carlsen in last year’s 1st Fischer Random World Championship.
So will now shift his focus to the Grand Chess Tour, which kicks off with the Superbet Chess Classic Romania in Bucharest in June.
