Tim Cone hopes to have Cebuano big man Greg Slaughter back

Not long after steering the Barangay Ginebra Kings to their 14th championship with a title conquest in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Philippine Cup, head coach Tim Cone’s first order of business was to try and get Cebuano big man Greg Slaughter back into their fold for the 2021 season.

It can be recalled that earlier this year, the 7-footer announced that he was taking a sabbatical from the sport. Since then, the former University of the Visayas star has been training with renowned trainer Gary Boyson and just recently, wed longtime girlfriend, Schinina Juban.

“We are hoping to get Greg back. I think that he will be huge for us,” said Cone during the postgame press conference not long after they beat TNT last Wednesday.

Cone added Slaughter would have a profound impact on how Ginebra plays, if and when he decides to return to the squad.

“I would love to have Greg back to the team. That will help Japeth (Aguilar) out in terms of giving him a break. We can be a little bit more creative in the way we play. We get Greg back and move forward to the all-Filipino,” explained Cone.

Cone added that aside from wanting Slaughter back, he doesn’t expect any major changes happening to the Kings.

“I’d like the team to come back intact and find a way to get Greg back in the lineup and go from there. I think we can still compete for championships if we stay intact and get Greg back,” Cone said. “I don’t see any dramatic changes in the team.” (JNP)
