Cebuano ace Roger Ray Pogoy hit the ground running as he scored a career-high 45 points to power the TNT Tropang Giga to a 100-95 come-from-behind win over the Alaska Aces in the opening game of the restart of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Philippine Cup on Sunday, October 11, 2020, at the Angeles University Foundation gym in Pampanga.
Pogoy, the pride of Talisay City, sank 10 three-pointers, the last of which tied the game at 92-all before Jayson Castro took over down the stretch, scoring from the free-throw line and in the shaded lane, to push the Giga in front for good.
After Pogoy’s triple, veteran guard Ryan Reyes made two free-throws to shove TNT in front, 94-92, with 1:39 to go. Then, after Alaska’s Vic Manuel split his free-throws to cut TNT’s lead to one, Castro was fouled and swished two from the charity stripe to raise their lead to three, time down to 1:07.
Alaska’s Abu Tratter scored to pull the Aces closer but Castro answered with a floater that kissed the glass before dropping in to give TNT a 98-95 cushion with 27 ticks remaining.
Alaska’s fate was sealed after JV Casio dribbled the ball off his foot on their possession and Castro calmly sank two freebies to secure the victory for TNT.
Aside from his scoring barrage, Pogoy grabbed eight rebounds and added two assists and three steals. Castro added 28 markers as TNT weathered the absence of Bobby Ray Parks who sat the game out because of an injury. Newly-acquired big man Poy Erram also had his night cut short as he got ejected in the third due to two technical fouls.
Tratter led Alaska with 17 points.
