A midwife who found a toddler wandering on his own, naked and covered in mud, in Oxford has described the “bizarre” moment.
Natalie Madeleine said she came across a big crowd on Sunday afternoon and went to check if it was a medical emergency.
Police have since said the child is safe and well.
Instead, she said she saw a “butt naked, barefoot” child and dressed him in her jumper before putting him in her car to wait for the police.
Madeleine said she “saw the poor little boy and instantly checked whether he was hurt”.
“He did not seem physically hurt but had a lot of dirt on his face.
“It was very bizarre – he was wandering completely on his own and I just hope he is okay.”
She was unable to get him to respond when she asked for his name and address.
She added: “I do not even know if he knew English as he did not speak a word. He seemed very disorientated.”
Police arrived about 15 minutes later and put the toddler in a van.
Thames Valley Police said it responded to reports that a child was seen alone in Cowley, Oxford.
“Officers attended the scene where the child was located with members of the public. The child is now safe and well,” a spokesperson said.
