Olympics: Rower Cris Nievarez advances to men's singles sculls quarters

The Philippine national team is off to a good start in the Tokyo Olympics as Filipino rower Cris Nievarez booked a quarterfinals berth in the men's singles sculls event, Friday (July 23).

Nievarez, the lone Filipino representative who saw action on opening day, finished with a time of 7:22.97 to secure third place in Heat 5 at the Sea Forest Waterway in Odaiba, Japan.

The 21-year-old Nievarez finished behind Damir Martin of Croatia and Alexander Vyazovkin of Russia.

Martin led the preliminary heats with a time of 7:09.17, while Vyazovkin ended up in second spot after clocking in 7:14.95.

Nievarez, a 2019 SEA Games gold medalist, will now set his sights on the quarterfinals action on Monday (July 26).
