Toledo hospital vows probe into mother, child death

THE management of the Toledo City General Hospital has launched an investigation on the death of a mother and her baby following allegations of medical negligence.

Reports said the family of patient Immaline Villarino-Magno complained that the doctors, midwives and other health personnel of the hospital committed negligence that resulted in her and her newborn child’s death.

The incident happened on May 18, 2022, according to Azenith Villarino, sister of Immaline who was interviewed on radio dyLA on Wednesday, May 25, 2022.

Failure to transfer

The personnel attending to Immaline had failed to refer her immediately to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC), according to the patient’s husband, Joevinel Magno.

Magno told dyLA that his wife was referred to VSMMC around 6:30 p.m. but they were only able to travel to Cebu City from Toledo City around 10 p.m. of May 18.

Toledo is about one hour and 30 minutes from Cebu City.

Magno said he heard a VSMMC doctor asking the Toledo City General Hospital midwife on why the patient was not brought to VSMMC immediately.

Doctors at the VSMMC tried to perform a caesarean delivery on Immaline but the child was already dead.

Immaline also died due to blood loss.

Magno, in a Facebook post on May 18, also called on Toledo City Mayor Marjorie Perales to act on the incident.

Sympathy

In a statement posted on its Facebook page Tuesday, May 24, the Toledo City General Hospital said it “sympathizes deeply with the Caba and Villarino families on the death of Immaline and her baby.”

“We would like to express our deepest condolences to the family in these trying times and sincerely empathize on their copy and lack of elucidation of the issue,” it said.

It added that the management has already been conducting a thorough investigation on the matter, “following careful preliminary talks with the family since last week.”

“We humbly request for the kind understanding of the family while the investigation is ongoing. Rest assured that we will not hesitate to impose sanctions to any of our employees found guilty,” the hospital said.
