The young Toledo Hyenas showed incredible resilience and composure as they clawed back from a 12-point fourth period deficit to stun the heavily favored One-on-One C, 101-96, in the finals of the Cebu Youth Basketball League Summer Showcase Division 2 last Friday at the Cebu City Sports Institute.

The Hyenas got incredible performances from Mythical Five member Joeff Cyrus Abadies who had an eye-popping 35 points and six rebounds while Know The Culture Finals MVP Sam Kyle Aballe filled the stat sheet with 25 points, 15 boards, six steals, and four blocks.

Toledo needed those remarkable numbers to upend One-on-One C, which trailed by 12 in the fourth before embarking on a 7-0 run to tie the game at 86-all after a layup by Aballe with 1:03 to go. The Hyenas actually had the inside track on getting the victory in regulation as they held a 90-87 lead after a transition layup by Aballe with six seconds remaining.

But One-on-One relented and tied the game at 90-all as Kieff Suarez canned a triple from the right wing to tie the game at 90-all and send the thrilling match to overtime.

Fatigue, though, overcame One-on-One in overtime as most of their key players fell to cramps. Abadies and Kevin Mascariñas then took advantage, scoring five straight down the stretch to hack out the 101-96 win.

One-on-One was led by Kieff Suarez’s 17 points, highlighted by five triples.

In the third place game, Sherilin-Unisol outgunned the Coach G Basketball Academy 104-84 to win third place honors. Thirdy Dumago had an all-around performance with 16 points, seven rebounds, seven assists, and seven assists to lead Sherilin-Unisol.

The SLAM Magazine Mythical 5 was comprised of Caelan Mack of Coach G, Xian Garcia of Sherilin-Unisol, Abadies of the Toledo City Hyenas, and Kirk Dayday and CJ Yurag from One-on-One C.

The CYBL U16 Finals Friday presented by the MVP Sports Foundation will continue with the Division 1 finals on June 24 at the Cebu Sports Institute. A1 and CHBC-Juniors will battle in the third place game at 9:00 a.m., while the heavily favored RonBucz A of Ronald Bucao faces Future Basketball Academy of Leode Garcia at 10:30 a.m.. Both games will be aired live on Facebook through the Cebu Sports Live page.
