In a recent manga ranking by TV Asahi, 150,000 Japanese of various ages were surveyed to find out the best manga. Here are the titles that made it into the top five:

5. Dragon Ball

One of the legendary manga, Dragon Ball only made it to a seemingly low fifth position. Regardless, the story of Son Goku will remain close to the hearts of many. No matter how old we get, kamehameha will always be fun to mimic.

4. Detective Conan

It is no surprise that the longest-lasting mystery manga Detective Conan, which is still ongoing, is among the top favourites. In fact, its anime is also one of the longest-running, having aired since 1996 and still ongoing.

3. Slam Dunk

Despite being the only one among the top five that is not as well-received outside of Japan, except for countries like Taiwan, Slam Dunk is still a relatively popular choice for the Japanese. It is also considered as the pioneer for sports manga, which later included works like Prince Of Tennis, Kuroko’s Basketball, and Haikyu!

2. Demon Slayer

With astonishing popularity that grew exponentially recently, Demon Slayer has not only become the best-selling manga series of all time in December 2020, the box office sales for its movie has also broken the record of Spirited Away to be the highest-grossing movie of all time in Japan. Despite being in an overly saturated industry, Demon Slayer is indeed a dark horse, galloping past other famous works to a well-deserved second place.

1. One Piece

Running since 1997, One Piece has shown that it is able to withstand the test of time to come out triumphant. Its protagonist Monkey D. Luffy was also voted as one of the top favourite Shonen Jump manga characters.

One Piece is even being developed for a live action TV series on Netflix.

Below are the results for the top 100 manga with their respective points based on the votes. As a fan of Fairy Tail, I’m surprised to see it so far back in the ranking. How did your favourite manga fare?
