Troops Join Cleanup Of Waterways

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY - Looking at themselves as partner in environment preservation, the largest Army division of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) stationed in Mindanao, the 4th Infantry (Diamond) Division, has begun cleaning waterways in the region.

In partnership with the city government of Cagayan de Oro and other stakeholders, the "Diamond" troops helped clean the waterways of Barangays Patag, Bulua and Kauswagan here the other day.

This activity is aimed at rehabilitating Cagayan de Oro after the devastation caused by typhoon "Sendong."

The clean-up drive targeted the Sapang Creek of Bulua, Quirata Creek of Patag, and the highway of Kauswagan in this city wherein the 4th ID committed one platoon of soldiers.

Although Cagayan de Oro has already recovered from the devastation caused by the typhoon, the 4ID remained steadfast in helping make the city a safer place for its residents.

"Your Diamond troopers will continue its commitment with this kind of endeavor," Maj. Gen. Nestor A Añonuevo, commanding general of the AFP's Northern and Northeastern Mindanao 4th ID, said.

"We are much happy to help clean the waterways of the city, for we know that this simple gesture will save lives. This is also our way of giving back to our host city," said the AFP's area commander.

"We are here to serve the people not only by bearing arms to protect them from the harm brought about by the rebels as the enemy of the state, but also from the harm brought by natural disaster," Añonuevo added.
