The reigning UAAP champions University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons is going all in in their preparations for the upcoming UAAP season as they battle against NCAA runners-up Mapua in the start of the Filoil EcoOil Preseason Cup on Saturday at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan.

Promising Cebuano big Carl Tamayo will once spearhead UP’s attack along with UAAP Finals hero JD Cagulangan, Mythical Team member Zavier Lucero, and Senegalese center Malick Diouf.

"We understand how important these preseason preparations are for us as we try to build our team together before the UAAP season begins," said coach Goldwin Monteverde of their match against the Cardinals which tips off at 1 p.m.

Mapua, though, will be no pushover with the likes of Warren Bonifacio, Paolo Hernandez, and Brian Lacap leading the squad.

UP and Mapua are in a loaded Group A which also has Adamson, Perpetual, College of St. Benilde, National University, Arellano, University of the East, and Emilio Aguinaldo College.

Meanwhile, Group B consists of defending NCAA champion Letran along with La Salle, San Beda, Far Eastern University, San Sebastian, University of Santo Tomas, Lyceum, and Jose Rizal University.

Only the top four teams in each group will progress to the knockout playoffs, with the Finals culminating on August 27.

La Salle, led by Evan Nelle and Michael Phillips, renews its rivalry against old UAAP foe FEU, bannered by L-Jay Gonzales, at 3 p.m., while the Jerom Lastimosa-led Adamson duke it out against Will Gozum and St. Benilde at 5 p.m.

Games will be livestreamed on the Filoil EcoOil Sports Facebook page as well as in the respective schools' official social media pages.
