UAAP Rookie of the Year Mark Nonoy explains decision to leave UST

With a cloud of uncertainty hanging over the University of Santo Tomas (UST), reigning University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Rookie of the Year Mark Nonoy had to make a decision with the future of his basketball career potentially on the line.

That was when he made the tough call to move from UST to the De La Salle University Green Archers.

“Malungkot po kasi sa amin naman gusto talaga namin naman na mag-stay sa UST. Pero kami, naka-hang lang kami. Hindi namin alam kung anong mangyayari and yung career namin nakasalalay dito (We’re sad because we really wanted to stay at UST. But we were left hanging and we didn’t know what was going to happen. Our careers are at stake here),” said the native of La Carlota in Negros Occidental during his appearance on the web show, 2OT.

After trying to weather out the tempest caused by the alleged illegal training camp the Growling Tigers had in Sorsogon during the quarantine period, Nonoy said there were no clear-cut answers in sight especially in the wake of the resignation of head coach Aldin Ayo.

“Last minute na kami nag desisyon kasi inaalam namin kung ano talaga yung mangyayari sa team namin. Inaalam namin kung maba-ban or anong mangyayari. So wala pa rin. Hindi pa rin namin alam kung anong mangyayari sa team, kaya siguro it’s time na to maglipat na kami kasi hinahabol din namin ‘yung enrollment namin para makapasok kami sa one year residence po (It was a last-minute decision because we were really trying to find out what was going to happen to our team, if we were going to get banned or not. But we still didn’t know so it was time for us to transfer since we’re also trying to make sure we get enrolled so that we’ll serve the one year residency period),” explained Nonoy.

Once cleared, Nonoy is expected to suit up in UAAP Season 84 where he will share backcourt duties with two other promising guards in former San Beda standout, Evan Nelle and Isaiah Blanco-Hontiveros, the son of PBA legend Dondon Hontiveros.

"Sobrang excited kasi bagong kasama na naman. Bagong adjustment, bagong school, bagong community. Kailangan magadjust at I'm ready to learn something new (I’m very excited because I’ll have new teammates. It’s going to be a new adjustment to a new school and community. I need to adjust and I’m ready to learn something new)," said Nonoy. (JNP)
