THE University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters kicked off their second round campaign on a resounding note as they bested the University of San Jose- Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars, 80-74, in the 2019 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) Men’s Basketball Tournament at the Cebu Coliseum on Saturday, October 12, 2019.
UC bucked a slow start that saw them trail by 13, 16-29, and turned things around in the third period where they outscored USJ-R, 26-14, to turn a 34-40 deficit into a 60-52 lead.
While foreign student-athlete Tosh Sesay and Darren Shane Menina were their usual brilliant selves, UC got a jolt of energy from reserves Kyle Ordeniza and Renzo Galdo whose hard-nosed energy on both ends of the floor was just what the doctor ordered for the Webmasters surge ahead.
A 10-2 run capped by back-to-back baskets by John Jabello gave UC their largest lead of the game at 18, 76-58. However, USJ-R rallied to within four behind a 14-0 blitz, 72-76, capped by a three- pointer by Miguel Gastador with 1:02 to go.
But that was as close as USJ-R would get as UC answered back with a triple by Menina that sealed the win, the Webmasters’ fourth in seven games.
Sesay had another monstrous outing as he piled up a remarkable 29 points and 29 rebounds as well as two blocks. Menina ended up with 17 points, five boards and six assists while Jabello added 11.
Ordeniza chipped in eight points, two boards and a steal, and did a heads-up job containing the Jaguars’ speedy guard Renz Solomon.
USJ-R got 26 points from Gastador but it was not enough to keep them from losing their sixth game in eight tries. (SunStar Cebu)
