The official Twitter account of the University of the Philippines (UP) System (@upsystem) was hacked on Monday (April 25).

The account name of the UP System account has been changed to “takashi murakami” while its profile and cover photos have been removed.

The twitter biography of the account was also deleted. Its location has also been changed to Tokyo.

The University of the Philippines Media and Public Relations Office (UP MPRO), which maintains the UP System website (up.edu.ph) and the UP System’s official social media accounts, said that unknown users took over @upsystem on Twitter at 7:20 p.m. on Monday.

"Since then, the account has been renamed and has posted content not affiliated with the University. The UP MPRO has been trying to retrieve the @upsystem account as soon as possible," the UP MRO said in a statement.

The university administration said that the incident deprived its constituents on Twitter "of important announcements, news stories, and other online content that the Office publishes on the University’s website and promotes on its social media accounts."

UP MPRO called on the UP community members to keep updated with the latest announcements from UP through its other official social media accounts.

The account is still hacked as of writing. However, spam posts from the hackers are already deleted and unavailable.
