USJ-R Jaguars defeats CIT-U Wildcats to snap out of funk in Cesafi Season 22

The University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars nipped the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) Wildcats to end their losing spell in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) Season 22 collegiate basketball tournament last Sunday at the Cebu Coliseum.

Klein Gordillo led the way for USJ-R with 15 points, three rebounds, two blocks, and an assist as the Jaguars ended their four-game slump to improve to 2-4. CIT-U, meanwhile, dropped to 1-5.

Veteran big man Elmer Echavez added 14 markers, Karl Cabulao had 13, JZ Dizon pitched in 11 while Justine Jules Langres contributed 10 markers in the Jaguars’ victory.

CIT-U was breathing down USJ-R’s neck as they pulled to within one, 69-70. However, Echavez gave the Jaguars some breathing room at 72-69 as he scored a layup off a sweet pass by Cabulao.

The Wildcats had a shot at tying the game, but Didoy Proel missed a desperation triple right before the shot clock buzzer sounded. On the other end, USJ-R failed to get a shot off and committed a shot clock violation.

On CIT-U’s next offensive, Allen Gler tried to tie the game up but missed a corner triple. Cabulao then split his two free-throws to give USJ-R a four-point lead, 73-69. The Jaguars’ Ivan Ares then canned a straightaway three-pointer to trim the deficit to just one with two seconds to go.

However, USJ-R was able to cleanly inbound the ball and run the clock down to zero before CIT-U could commit a foul to secure the win.

In the high school basketball competition, Lance Sabroso exploded for 34 points, four rebounds, three assists, and three steals to lead the City of Bogo Science and Arts Academy to a 102-101 win over the CIT-U Baby Wildcats.

Leo Sabanal tallied 12 points, eight boards, three steals, and two blocks in USJ-R’s 64-49 win over the University of San Carlos Baby Warriors.

And finally, Allen Gako put up 23 points, six boards, four dimes, and three steals as the University of Cebu Baby Webmasters clobbered the University of the Visayas Baby Lancers, 72-51.
