USPF Panthers thwart USC Warriors in Cesafi Season 22 college basketball

The University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers dropped the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors, 72-67, to pick up their second win in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) Season 22 men’s basketball tournament on Sunday at the Cebu Coliseum.

The Panthers had the inside track on the win as they led by 10 early in the fourth period, 56-46. However, the Warriors rallied and trimmed the deficit to just two, 63-65. USPF, though, kept their composure and pushed their lead back to six, 69-63, after two free-throws from Dave Paulo and a putback by RR Cauba.

Cauba led USPF, which improved to 2-1, with 18 points, while Ajie Mendez and Neon Chavez chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively.

USC fell to 2-3.

In the high school games, the SHS-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles moved to 4-0 with an 82-74 win over the USC Baby Warriors. Jared Bahay and Alden Cainglet scored 14 apiece for the Magis Eagles, which had to dig deep to stave off the scrappy Baby Warriors.

The City of Bogo Science and Arts Academy Trailblazers also kept their perfect record with a thrilling 83-80 win over the University of Cebu (UC) Baby Webmasters. Simon Maghinay donned the hero’s cape for the Trailblazers as he sank the game-winning three-pointer with six seconds remaining.

The USPF Baby Panthers also notched their first win of the tournament after routing the UC-Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue, 79-66. Ron Jay Catalan and Peter Peteros powered USPF’s victory drive with 18 and 17 points, respectively.
