USPF rallies past USJ-R in Cesafi Season 22 college hoops

The University of Southern Philippines (USPF) Panthers continued their fantastic season with a 63-59 come-from-behind win over the struggling University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) Season 22 collegiate basketball tournament last Thursday night at the Cebu Coliseum.

The Panthers continue to surprise a lot of people as they sit in second place in the standings, with a 4-1 win-loss card, just half a game behind the University of the Visayas Green Lancers, which is unbeaten at 4-0.

USPF made their move in the fourth period, uncorking 15 unanswered points to take a 55-46 lead. However, USJ-R kept their heads in it and pulled to within two, 55-57, after a corner triple by lefty guard Jay Deiparine with just 39 seconds remaining on the clock.

The Panthers, though, remained steady as Neon Chavez answered with a short jumper from the baseline that beat the shot clock buzzer and gave USPF a 59-55 lead with 23 seconds to go.

Dave Paulo led USPF in scoring with 11 markers.

In the high school division, the University of Cebu Baby Webmasters torched the Cebu Eastern College Dragons, 77-60. John Linares led UC in scoring with 22 markers, while Allen Gako and Mark Solonia helped out with 13 and 11 points, respectively.
