STAKEHOLDERS in Mandaue City supported the proposed ordinance placing electrical and telecommunication wires underground within the city’s business districts during a public hearing on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2020.

City Councilor Joel Seno, the ordinance’s author, said leaning utility posts and dangling wires must be removed as these pose a hazard to residents.

He said the project will be a joint venture with the City and stakeholders sharing the cost to place the wires underground. However, the matter is up for further discussion, he said.

Seno said the project will be implemented in phases.

To attain the objective of the proposed ordinance, Mayor Jonas Cortes will create the Wires and Cable Technical Team through an executive order.

The Wires and Cable Technical Team will manage, regulate and control the installation, construction, design and repairs of underground utility wires.

The team will be composed of both private and government agencies, which will supervise and monitor the full implementation of the ordinance.

Seno told SunStar Cebu that the proposed ordinance still has to undergo a third and final reading. (KFD)
