THE Small Basketeers of the Philippines (SBP) squad of the University of the Visayas (UV) captured their second straight championship after they nipped the St. John’s Institute of Bacolod, 40-35, in the Visayas Regional Finals of the 34th SBP Passerelle Twin Tournament backed by Milo at the Pototan Astrodome in Iloilo City on Sunday, Nov. 10, 2019.
Neil John Bernante was the man for UV as he sank a straightaway three-pointer with just four seconds to go to shatter a 35-all deadlock and give the Baby Lancers the lead for good.
That long bomb also happened to be UV’s second straight make from beyond the arc after Denver Bisnar sank one to tie the game up at 35-all.
UV led for the first three periods before St. John’s came alive in the fourth, going up, 35-32, after a deuce by Santino Loretizo with 2:42 to go. However, that proved to be their final moment on top as UV unleashed their knockout blow with the two straight triples and a lay-up that guaranteed their victory and a spot in the national finals on Nov. 23 and 24 in Roxas City.
