Victims told not to rebuild homes yet

THE Cebu City Government will implement a reblocking in a sitio in Barangay Mambaling that was hit by fire on All Saints’ Day, Nov. 1, 2022.

Around 72 houses were destroyed and 148 families were displaced as a result of the fire that hit Sitio Tugas in Barangay Mambaling.

The displaced families are currently being evacuated at the Mambaling Elementary School, while the City will conduct clearing operations to make way for the reblocking.

Reblocking typically involves putting more space between houses to limit a fire’s spread as well as to allow emergency responders to access the fire scene.

For now, the City Government has temporarily prohibited the fire victims from rebuilding their homes at the fire site while the clearing and reblocking operations will be initiated.

Aside from the reblocking, the Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CCDRRMC) has recommended to the City Council to declare the area under a state of calamity.

If a state of calamity is declared, the barangay will be able to release its emergency funds to be able to provide aid to their affected constituents.

The CCDRMC also urged the Department of Engineering and Public Works, Division for the Welfare of the Urban Poor and City Planning Development Office to implement the reblocking of Sitio Tugas. (PAC, JKV)
