Blue Whales Spotted in Italian Strait Closed Due to Coronavirus Restrictions

Two whales were spotted in a stretch of water between Sicily and southern Italy that was closed to all non-essential travel due to the coronavirus, according to footage posted by the Italian fire and rescue service on April 9.

The footage shows two whales emerging from the water and swimming side-by-side in the Strait of Messina, the fire and rescue service said.

Sicilian President Nello Musumeci ordered that only those commuting between Sicily and Calabria for work could travel on the Strait, as well as healthcare and emergency workers, until April 13. Credit: Vigili del Fuoco via Storyful
