Tatsuya Kawanishi captured video of strong winds bringing large waves close to a beach house he rented in Mallorca on January 22, as Storm Gloria moved across Spain.
Kawanishi told Storyful it was the first time he had witnessed such ferocious conditions in the eight years he has been living in Mallorca.
“I’ve never experienced these huge waves before…I still can’t believe what I’ve seen today,” said Kawanishi.
Kawanishi said cargo ships were reportedly not permitted to dock in the area due to the poor weather and local supermarkets shelves were close to empty.
El Pais reported that at least four Spanish nationals died as a result of the storm, which brought “serious” destruction to communities on the Valencian coast, especially in El Perelló, Spain, according to Spanish media.
Storm waves as high as 27.7 feet were recorded off the coast of Spain, local media reported, as well as winds up to 71 mph (115 km/h). Credit: Tatsuya Kawanishi via Storyful
