Itchy and Scratchy: Wombat Mother and Baby Scratch Simultaneously at Cradle Mountain

Sydney nature enthusiast Philipp Glanz came across a pair of wombats while visiting Cradle Mountain, Tasmania, on September 8.

He encountered the duo, which he described as a mother and baby, on the bridge to the Overland hiking track. They happily scratched in unison while Glanz recorded. He posted the video to Instagram, where he also posted an image of the wombats.

The Australian wildlife rescue organisation WIRES says that many wombats suffer from mange, which can cause itchy skin. It’s not known whether that’s the case for the wombats in this video – they could just be having a good scratch. Credit: Philipp Glanz via Storyful
