Thousands Join Baghdad Protest Against US Presence in Iraq

Thousands of people joined a demonstration in Baghdad against the US military presence in Iraq on Friday, January 24, the latest example of escalating tensions between the US and Iraq since the killing of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani.

The march was called by the influential Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, and comes amid separate protests against the Shia-led government and in favor of political reform. Reuters reported that many anti-government protesters feared this latest demonstration against the US could overshadow their months-long anti-government protest movement.

The demonstration follows a vote in Iraq’s parliament earlier in January to expel remaining US troops from the country. Credit: @ha_88mg via Storyful
