The UNHCR announced the opening of a new refugee facility in Tripoli, Libya, on December 6.
The new center functions as a gathering and departure facility, and a safe alternative to detention for refugees in Libya, UNHCR spokesperson Paula Barrachina Esteban said.
More than 130 refugees, most of whom had been previously held in Libyan detention centers, were evacuated to Niger on December 6, the agency said.
According to the UNHCR, Libya hosts more than 40,000 refugees and asylum seekers, with the vast majority of those who cross the Mediterranean to Europe departing from Libya.
