Now for some light election news.
Getting laughs from netizens at the moment is this viral video of a guy pretending to be a TV news reporter at a polling precinct in Barangay (Village) Tartaria in Silang, Cavite.
In the video posted by Facebook user Regie Panaligan Ganadillo on Monday, his friend Nery Tan Caspe can be seen standing in the hallways of the polling station as voters queued up behind him.
Like a true reporter, Caspe held on to a make-believe earpiece while holding up a foldable umbrella like a mic.
He impressively kept a straight face throughout and actually looked very professional.
The video starts with a person off-camera acting as the TV anchor, saying in Filipino: “In Tartaria Silang, Cavite Nery Caspe reporting from a polling station. Nery?”
Caspe got TV reporting language down pat and started his spiel by saying, “Yes, Mel,” as if he was talking to veteran GMA News anchor Mel Tiangco. He then continued to report what was happening in the precinct.
“A peaceful election. That’s what voters here in Tartaria are hoping for. And that’s what happened. In fact, only a few voters remain here behind me,” he said, complete with a hand gesture pointing to the people in line.
“There was a rush of people earlier this morning who were met with heat and exhaustion while waiting but now, there are little people. However, poll watchers are not letting their guard down because according to them, there will be another rush of people later in the afternoon. Now we are just waiting for people to finish voting,” Caspe said before touching his ear again and pretending to listen to an anchor in the studio.
He even replies to questions he “hears” through the earpiece multiple times.
Based on his report, the precinct did not encounter any problems with their vote-counting machines, unlike other polling stations.
The video ends abruptly but that was enough to tickle netizens’ funny bone. As of this article’s posting, it already has 403,000 views, 26,00o reactions, 7,871 shares, and 1,800 comments. Many were impressed by it.
“I don’t know if he’s impersonating someone but I can definitely remember someone who speaks like that while covering news for GMA during the elections,” Facebook user Freddie Val Olano said. “It’s awesome … even the way he stutters and how he pretended that there was a delay in the audio [feed].”
Gerlie Vargas Borromeo said that Caspe could have a bright future in TV reporting.
Danica Atad Del Rosario tagged friends and said that she found the video really funny.
Mark Gil Valeroso loved how Caspe kept on saying “Yes, Mel.”
Elson Jude said that he wants to make a similar video.
Ganadillo told Coconuts Manila in a Facebook message that he is overwhelmed by the positive response their video has received. He also said that his friend Caspe has received messages saying that he should start a YouTube channel.
“Beyond this success, we are so much grateful and hoping that this would open doors of opportunities,” Ganadillo said.
