VP Leni Robredo recalls the time math wiz Farrell Wu donated his tutoring money

Farrell Eldrian Wu made the papers a few days ago when the Manila Bulletin ran a feature story on young Filipino student who recently graduated from the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) with a perfect 5.0 grade point average.

The math whiz apparently has a heart to go with that big brain, as Vice President Leni Robredo recalls the time in 2015 when Wu, then just 14 years old, donated his earnings from tutoring to the Jesse Robredo Foundation. “When I was in Congress, he visited me in the office to donate money he earned from his tutoring work to the Jesse M. Robredo Foundation because, at that time, we were building schools in remote areas,” read Vice President Robredo’s post.

According to Robredo, Wu has been a longtime family friend, having been her daughter Jillian’s friend since childhood. “They trained for International Math Competitions and competed together. It was Farrel [sic] who would always bag the GOLD for the Philippines. He brought a lot of honor for the country from Grade School and High School.”

In 2014, the then-13-year-old Wu also visited Robredo in Congress. Robredo described him then as “the country’s #1 math wizard [who was also] named one of the 10 Smartest Kids in the World by Business Insider.”
