BENDIGO-based VSG Promotions adds another Filipina pug to its roster after signing unbeaten prospect Wenie Cline Verano.
“VSG is very pleased to announce that unbeaten rising star Wenie Cline Verano will be joining our team,” VSG Promotions’ Gary Conolly announced on Facebook.
“Wenie will be based in the Philippines with our other two superstars—her cousin former world champion Marnelle Verano, and reigning Philippines champion and IBF (International Boxing Federation) No. 4 Chay Rivas. With seven knockouts from her nine wins, Wenie will bring a lot of excitement to the international boxing scene as she climbs up the world rankings. Welcome to the team, Wenie. It will be a lot of fun.”
Wenie is a 26-year-old super flyweight with an unblemished record of 9-0 with seven knockouts. She’s the cousin of former world champion Marnelle, who signed with VSG Promotions earlier this year.
Wenie fought twice in 2019, wherein she beat Aleth Jimenez and Joan Ambalong.
Connolly earlier said that he wants to build up the careers of his Filipina fighters and hopefully give them a chance to fight internationally by 2021, when the Covid-19 pandemic dies down.
VSG Promotions already gave Rivas a world title shot earlier this year. She, however, lost to IBF Femal minimumweight champion Yokasta Valle by a sixth round stoppage.
In the Philippines, female fighters rarely get opportunities unlike male fighters. But with the help of promoters like VSG Promotions, the future is indeed bright for Filipina boxers. (EKA)
