SEVERAL waterspouts were seen in Cebu and Bohol on Wednesday, June 22, 2022, just after heavy rains occurred in those areas.

An official from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) in Central Visayas said they had issued thunderstorm warnings across the two provinces before the waterspouts appeared.

Waterspout sightings

The first reported sighting of a waterspout happened in the sea off San Francisco town in the Camotes Islands, northeast Cebu. But Pagasa Visayas Weather Bureau Chief Al Quiblat told SunStar Cebu that it was neither a waterspout nor a tornado but a thick cumulonimbus cloud.

Quiblat said that there should be a whirling or rotation of the clouds for it to be classified as a waterspout or tornado.

The second sighting took place in the town of Argao in southern Cebu, and this time, Quiblat confirmed that the weather phenomenon was a waterspout.

Another waterspout was also captured on video by residents of the town of Dauis in Bohol around 10 a.m.

Flee on sight

Quiblat said that the public should immediately flee from the path of waterspouts or tornadoes because they can inflict injuries or even cause death.

Quiblat urged the public to monitor weather advisories issued by their office and to take precautionary measures during intense weather conditions.
