Welcoming the New Year: What’s next?

Now that 2013 has bid adieu, we take a look once again at some of the more controversial issues that made its mark on Philippine show business in the Year of the Snake.

There have been scandals, breakups and such, but who took the cake in terms of mileage? Most importantly, who or what will follow next year? Let’s take a peek.

New Look

After strutting a ’do reminiscent of heartthrob Daniel Padilla’s popular moptop, singer Charice tried to distance herself from comparison to the singer-actor by cutting her hair even shorter.

Another hairy issue that trended on social media is Toni Gonzaga’s full bangs, which she debuted on “The Voice of the Philippines.” The controversial hairdo earned for Toni comparison to the hairstyle worn by the Ivatan women of Batanes.

Now, many are asking: Who will follow Charice and Toni and bravely try to reinvent their image in 2014?

Leading candidates are trendsetters Anne Curtis and Vice Ganda. Some also mentioned BB Gandanghari. Will they or won’t they?

We’ll see.

Bitter Celebrity Splits

Breakups are quite a normal thing, but it is a different thing when it concerns celebrities.

First on the list are Nikki Gil and Billy Crawford, who called it quits after five years. Billy was linked to Coleen Garcia who, ironically, also split with Gab Valenciano this year when the latter went to the US.

Another hotly discussed separation is that of Angel Locsin and Phil Younghusband’s; Luis Manzano also ended his relationship with Jennylyn Mercado; and one of the more controversial splits is that of Derek Ramsay and Cristine Reyes’, who were only together for a month. Of course, there’s also the breakup of Vicki Belo and Hayden Kho but we won’t even dare go there.

So, who’s next in 2014? Some say it’s going to be Angelica Panganiban and John Lloyd Cruz. Others point to Gerald Anderson and Maja Salvador.

Will there be another rigodon in the works?

May-December Love Affairs

Age doesn’t matter, they say, particularly when it concerns the heart.

You’ve probably heard the story of Freddie Aguilar, 60, and his 17-year-old wife. Well, that’s not unique in show business.

There is also the love story of Keanna Reeves, 46, and her 20-year-old non-showbiz paramour Kevin. The two have been together for over eight months now.

There are others, of course. More famously, there’s also Vic Sotto and Pauleen Luna.

Now, wags are scared to even think of who follows next. As for us, we simply worry for Ryzza Mae Dizon. Really.

Sex Scandals

Chito Miranda and Neri Naig learned a lesson the hard way last August, when their “private video” was leaked thus becoming a trending topic on Twitter.

Wally Bayola’s alleged private video also surfaced online in September.

We dread the day that another celebrity would follow their lead.

Indeed, we are on our knees praying that Heart Evangelista and Chiz Escudero will not have enough time in their hands for such frivolities. Please.

Weddings And Engagements

After announcing her pregnancy in September, Melai Cantiveros had a simple and intimate wedding with Jason Francisco at the Holy Cross Parish in General Santos City.

A certain Lloyd Lee wasn’t eager to be left behind either, proposing and eventually marrying Miss Universe 2011 3rd Runner-Up Shamcey Supsup.

So who’s next? Well, who knows really? Next thing you know Angel Locsin is marrying Luis Manzano. But then, that’s just us. In the end, we just hope that 2014 will be as juicy as 2013.
