THE first ever Philippine Quality Award (PQA), the highest level of national recognition for exemplary organizational performance, in Central Visayas was bagged by world-class machine shop and metalworking firm Cebu-based Wellmade Motors and Development Corp.

Wellmade president Dr. Philip Tan received the PQA Level 2 in recognition of the company’s proficiency in quality management on Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2021 at Circa 1900, Cebu City from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Competitiveness Bureau.

“Friends oftentimes ask me what differentiates Wellmade from other medium and large-size companies in terms of standards and systems. My answer is simple: It is not the size that matters but the passion and vision of how the company would be best recognized for,” Tan said in his speech.

Tan described the award as by far, the most prestigious yet the most difficult to achieve, being the only award created by law under Republic Act 9013 and supposed to be awarded by the President, bearing the seal of the Republic of the Philippines.

Since 1998, PQA has produced a total of 79 awardees, of which 73.5 percent came from the private sector and 26.6 percent from the government, government-owned and controlled corporations.

Close to 90 percent of the awardees come from the National Capital Region, with the rest from Regions 1, 2, 6, 9, 11 and 12.

“I am humbled that today, Region 7 has finally succeeded in producing its first PQA awardee,” Tan said.

He said the award is proof that his company is at par with the rest of the world.

Wellmade is the first company in Region 7 to receive the award in the Philippines.

The ceremony was led by DTI Assistant Secretary Asteria Caberte and director Lilian Salonga of the DTI Competitiveness Bureau.

“We will promise to deliver more in Region 7. This award validates the manifestation of how the 25-year journey of Wellmade has shown its commitment in achieving continuous commitment in quality and innovative processes and products that are at par with world standards,” Caberte said.

Caberte said the metalworking industry provides support for other industries. She said it is the right entry point for the region.

Salonga said the PQA, as an institution, is a seal of excellence awarded to companies that ensure that world-class excellence is exemplified in the organization.

Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Steven Yu said Tan is an inspiration to the Cebuano business community, being one of the chamber’s past presidents.

“He has a very progressive mind and is always a trendsetter. He sets examples on how to pay it forward by helping the government instead of complaining. Hopefully, everyone can be like him,” he said.
