WARNING! Contains spoilers for season 2 of The Sinner
But instead of watching it and thinking how well it’s written/what a great actor Elisha Henig is/how I hope I never accidentally end up drinking jimsonweed tea by mistake, I couldn’t stop thinking that I recognised that creepy Beacon from somewhere.
In case you’ve already forgotten, Lionel Jeffries, aka The Beacon, is the leader of the Mosswood cult, and the man behind all those weird therapy sessions where his people basically just beat each other to make themselves feel better. Yeah, good one…
Anyway, it finally hit me where I’d seen actor Brennan Brown before during the fifth episode; around the part where he’s about to sacrifice that poor goat. Don’t ask me why that jogged my memory, but it did.
Remember when you used to save up your pocket money so you could go and see the latest blockbuster at the cinema? And just as you were getting settled in with your half sweet, half salty popcorn and your Tango Blast, an advert for Orange would come on.
And guess who was in the franchise of adverts where a film was being pitched by a passionate director, only for it to get ruined by the man with the money saying it had to include a mobile phone? That’s right: The Beacon!
Check it out!
So next time you’re thinking about The Beacon being a right shit, just remember he also made sure trips to the cinema weren't ruined by people forgetting to put their phones on silent. So, swings and roundabouts…
