Why Pamela Anderson wants to 'date' Aquino

He's been seen dating local celebrities. Now, President Benigno Aquino III has been asked to dinner by a Hollywood star.

Film and television actor Pamela Anderson has sent a letter seemingly asking the Philippines' bachelor president to a date.

"[S]hould you find yourself in Los Angeles, I'd love to take you to dinner and talk more about how we can help Mali," Anderson said.

Mali is a 39-year-old elephant confined in the Manila Zoo, which has been the subject of environmental campaigns urging her transfer.

"Thank you for taking a strong, serious stance on her (Mali's) behalf by issuing a directive to consider moving her to a sanctuary," Anderson said.

Aquino last year directed the Agriculture department and the Bureau of Animal Industries to determine Mali's condition and facilitate her transfer.

"In a world filled with political self-interest, your character and integrity are inspiring," Anderson told Aquino.

"I know that the Philippines is a great nation," the actress added, quoting Mahatma Gandhi as saying "the greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated."

Anderson wrote the letter in support of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, a group that has been campaigning for Mali's transfer.

"In her current environment, Mali is cruelly denied socialization, stimulation, room to explore, and everything else that is natural and important to her," a PETA statement read.

It added that the zoo is failing to treat fatal foot problems which Mali has contracted over decades without proper veterinary care.

"Because of the conditions at the Manila Zoo, Mali is likely to die young," the group said, noting that elephants can live as long at 70 years in the proper environment.

"The best way to save her life is to send her to a place that provides proper vet care and is more like an elephant's natural habitat," PETA added.

Anderson was not the first celebrity to have written to Aquino about Mali. British rock icon Morrissey last year appealed to Aquino to act on the elephant's condition.

Other high-profile personalities who have spoken for Mali include French film legend Brigitte Bardot, wildlife conservationist Dr. Jane Goodall, and Nobel Prize–winning author J.M. Coetzee.

Earlier this year, a PETA photo shoot featured top models who took off their clothes, covering their bodies only with placards calling for Mali's transfer.
