Enbridge filed a legal challenge Tuesday to Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's recent demand that the company shut down its oil pipeline that crosses the waterway connecting Lake Huron and Lake Michigan. The Canadian company accused the state of overstepping its bounds, arguing that Enbridge's Line 5 was under the sole regulatory jurisdiction of the U.S. Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration. “This is the latest attempt by the state of Michigan to interfere with the operation of this critical infrastructure by assuming authority it does not possess,” the company said in a statement.
A drawn-out, five-day statistics exam for the nation, the process of naming our 46th president was met with exhaustion and, for many, elation when Joe Biden finally took the stage in Wilmington, Delaware, to deliver his acceptance speech. The speech would have been the most noteworthy moment of the evening if only there hadn’t been that drone show, wowing both America and Biden himself, whose wide-eyed look of awe was immediately meme-ified. The patriotic display was the work of Verge Aero, a small Philadelphia-based startup with six employees that’s pulled in pretty big clients, including the Philadelphia Eagles, Microsoft and, now, the crowning achievement for President-elect Biden’s campaign.
All of the New Zealand and West Indies players in isolation in Christchurch have tested negative for the novel coronavirus and are due to be released as scheduled on Thursday, a day ahead of their opening Twenty20 match in Auckland. About 20 players and support staff from both sides arrived in New Zealand after their commitments in the Indian Premier League and underwent a 14-day mandatory isolation period. New Zealand Cricket, who confirmed the negative tests, said the players were likely to be released from about 10 a.m. (2100 GMT) on Thursday before heading to Auckland for the first of three Twenty20 games.

A Minnesota regulatory panel on Tuesday signed off on Enbridge Energy’s planned Line 3 crude oil pipeline replacement across northern Minnesota, leaving only one minor state permit to go before construction can begin. The independent Public Utilities Commission notified Enbridge in a filing that the company has complied with its pre-construction requirements. Enbridge said in a statement that the authorization to begin construction means only a final construction storm water permit is needed from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency before construction can begin.

Twitter prepares to hand out more blue checkmarks, YouTube suspends OANN and Discord is raising a big funding round. Twitter paused its blue checkmark verification system in 2017 as it faced controversy over who gets verified — specifically over the decision to verify the organizer of the infamous and deadly white supremacist rally in Charlottesville. Since then, Twitter has done occasional verifications for medical experts tweeting about COVID-19 and candidates running for public office, but it hasn't brought back the program in a systematic way.

A historic day on Wall Street Tuesday as the Dow closed above 30,000 for the time in history. The blue chip index rallied 454 points to a record closing high of 30,046 points. The S&P 500 jumped 57 points to a lifetime closing high as well. The Nasdaq rose 156. Investors snapped up stocks on hopes COVID-19 vaccines will slow the spread of the virus and lead to stronger economic growth next year. The Dow has now rallied nearly 12-thousand points, or 65 percent, from the March low set when investors feared the pandemic would push the U.S. economy into a long-lasting recession. Politics also gave markets a boost after President-elect Joe Biden was given the official go ahead to start his transition to the White House. Max Wolff of Multivariate: "I think people like the cabinet post we're seeing from Biden. They like the idea that the sort of long period of uncertainty about how much difficulty we'd see an outgoing Trump administration make. I think that people like that that's over. I think people like Janet Yellen as an idea for a new Treasury secretary. She's a known quantity, was a pretty able sort of hands in a tough moment, so I think that's kind of it." But with coronavirus cases surging by the day and millions of Americans still unemployed, some traders expect to see a sharp market pullback in the next few weeks. Turning to some of the stock standouts of the day: Tesla now has a market value of more than half a trillion dollars. The electric car maker is revving higher ahead of officially becoming a member of the benchmark S&P 500 index next month. The stock has risen more than six-fold this year and was up more than 6 percent to a record high on Tuesday. And Boeing: The aerospace giant received preliminary approval from European regulators to get the 737 MAX back in the air. Shares of Boeing rallied more than 3 percent.
