THE Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL) has announced that the deadline for the submission of applicants for its first-ever draft is on September 30.
The WNBL is the country’s first professional basketball league for women.
According to WNBL executive vice president Rhose Montreal, the news of the league’s pro status has revitalized the women’s basketball scene, so much so that they have already received 327 applications since posting the form a few days ago.
“In only two days, we drew 327 draft applicants,” said Montreal in the online Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Forum on Tuesday, September 8.
Montreal said they plan to have 10 to 12 teams in the next season of the WNBL, which she projects to kick off in January of next year. She added that the project has long been on the backburner.
“Even before the pandemic, there were plans to bring the WNBL to the next level which was to turn pro,” said Montreal.
The WNBL will follow the pattern set by the successful National Basketball League, its male counterpart.
Montreal explained that after they receive all the applications, they would screen all of these until October 10. Then, a draft combine will follow on October 20 to 22, which would be followed by the draft on October 30.
Should all things align, a pre-season tournament will be staged followed by the actual tournament on the third week of January.
The league is open to local players as young as 18 years old. (JNP)
