CEBUANA volleyball star Deanna Wong’s status as one of the best volleyball players in the country has placed a spotlight on her so bright that it illuminates aspects outside the court including her relationship with former Adamson skipper Jema Galanza.
And while the relationship has been going steady since 2018, it has not been without any challenges. Wong and Galanza recently shared the stage on the “So She Did” web show last weekend where they openly discussed their relationship.
Wong shared that in order for her to truly be happy, she had to embrace herself first.
“Just be yourself. I think you should think of yourself lang siguro, think of loving yourself. Kasi nung time na nagkakilala kami ni Jema, parang dun ako, parang naging happy ako kasi tama naman si Jema, when you’re hiding something kasi, parang hindi mo nae-express yung sarili mo. Hindi mo nae-express yung feelings mo. And it’s like you’re hiding something, parang parati kang nagu-guilty kasi you’re hiding something. Parang you’re doing something wrong kahit alam mo namang hindi kasi ‘di ba? Nagmamahal ka lang naman ng tao (Just be yourself. I think you should think of yourself, think of loving yourself. Because at the time when I met Jema, it was at that time that I became truly happy. When you’re hiding something, you really aren’t able to truly express yourself and it feels like you’re hiding something. It feels like you’re guilty because you’re hiding something that’s wrong even though you know you aren’t. You’re just loving someone),” said 22-year-old Wong who was once named the UAAP’s Best Setter award-winner.
Wong said being recognized came with a hefty price — their privacy. Wong relayed that before they became an item, Galanza’s life was a quiet one. However, that all changed when they became a couple.
“Nung naging kami, naba-bash siya kasi bakit daw ganito? Bakit daw ganyan? Lagi ko namang sinasabi sa kanya na hayaan mo na yun kasi ganun talaga yung mga tao di ba? Para lang may masabi. Basta yung focus niya kami, kami lang dalawa. I keep on telling her that naman lagi (When we became together, she got bashed a lot. But I always told her to let those people be and keep her focus on us. I remind her of that all the time),” Wong said.
Wong also shared the sacrifices that she had to make when she and Galanza became a couple.
“I think ang pinaka na-sacrifice ko was my loved ones, I think. I think that was my ultimate sacrifice. Ayoko na mag-elaborate pa masyado, pero I had to sacrifice yung the ones I loved. Yung mga tao na andoon sa akin ever since I was a baby. So yun, yung na-sacrifice ko kasi iba kasi yung beliefs, iba yung perspectives ng mga tao, so hindi natin mapipigilan yun. So, ayun. Yun yung pinaka na-sacrifice ko for my happiness (I think the most that I’ve sacrificed was my loved ones. I won’t elaborate any further but I had to sacrifice the ones I loved. People who were there ever since I was a baby. They have different beliefs and perspectives so we can’t stop those. I think’s that the biggest sacrifice I’ve had to make for my happiness),” said Wong. (JNP)
