Pope Francis, in his address to Catholics in the Vatican, likened abortion to hiring a “contract killer” to solve a problem.
“Interrupting a pregnancy is like eliminating someone. Getting rid of a human being is like resorting to a contract killer to solve a problem,” he said.
Several deeply Catholic countries have liberalized their abortion laws recently. Ireland has overturned a long-standing abortion ban. Chile has allowed it in certain cases. Argentina, the pope’s home country, came close to legalizing it.
Abortion is illegal in the Philippines but women with unwanted pregnancies troop to the black market to get medicines that help induce abortions.
