The latest survey from polling agency Social Weather Station (SWS) found that 51 per cent of Filipinos agree to the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency’s (PDEA) proposal to make drug testing mandatory for Grade 4 students and above.
Malacañang backed the proposal saying it would ensure the safety of children against the influence of illegal drugs.
“I think that is a good idea because at least the parents would know whether or not their children are addicted or being used in the drug industry,” Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said.
This was a reversal of the Palace’s original stance against the measure.
The PDEA floated the idea of mandatory drug testing in schools in June this year. However, this was met with criticisms from many including the police and lawmakers.
