President Rodrigo Duterte downplayed the sinking of a Filipino fishing boat by a Chinese vessel in the West Philippine Sea as “just a collision”.

"That is just a collision of boats. Do not make it worse," Duterte said in his first public remark about the incident after a week of silence, urging the public for calm.

Duterte’s reaction is in contrast with that some of his officials. Many of the president’s critics want a stronger response.
