Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte hailed Health Secretary Francisco Duque III as the "hero" of the government's "good" pandemic response.
"Compared with other countries, which is not really the time to do comparisons, but we are doing good in the fight against Covid and Secretary Duque is the hero here," Duterte said in his address to the public on May 3.
However, several senators disagreed with the president's assessment of Duque, in particular Senator Ping Lacson.
“He said that the Philippines is doing good in the fight against COVID-19 and called his health secretary a ‘hero.’ What he really meant was hilo (dazed),” Lacson tweeted.
The Philippines has the second worst outbreak in Southeast Asia with nearly 1 million coronavirus infections and more than 16,500 deaths.
Do you agree that health chief Duque is the real hero of the Philippines COVID-19 response?
